Groundwater Sampling

Every three months Ford Motor Company has a subcontractor come on-site to take groundwater samples from the two monitoring wells that are located behind 50119 Lexington West.  The next such sampling is scheduled for Monday, July 27, 2015 and their subcontractor has requested and received permission from the Board to enter the premises.

Their subcontractor, Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA), has recently merged with GHD Services Inc. and their corporate name has been changed to GHD.

Therefore beginning with the July 27th groundwater samplings, the crew's trucks, hard hats, etc. will be marked "GHD" instead of "CRA".

Permeable Reactive Barrier construction progress

Construction of the Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) has begun and is proceeding according to the work plan schedule.  On Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7th), work crews were excavating to expose an abandoned sanitary sewer so that it can be cut out from the vicinity of the PRB and capped.   The panorama photo above shows the unearthing of the south end of the sewer line.  The staked square outlined with yellow caution tape to the right of the pick-up truck marks the north end of the sewer segment to be removed.   The PRB will run the entire width of this photo and its location is marked by a series of three parallel stakes with red tape on their tops. Check back here for photos of the trenching activity that will occur during the week of Nov. 11th.

Permeable Reactive Barrier Work Plan

Ford Motor Company has announced the following work plan for the construction of the Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) that will be installed on the former Visteon plant property near the northwest corner of the Manors at Central Park Condominiums:

• Week of Oct 28th - locate underground utility lines and clear away brush.
• Week of Nov 4th - begin delivery of equipment and materials; excavate and remove abandoned underground utility lines in the vicinity of the PRB
• Week of Nov 11th – DeWind (Ford's subcontractor) will begin the trenching and installation of the PRB. They anticipate having the work completed by Thanksgiving and during this portion of the work plan DeWind will be working 7 days per week.  Actual construction work will be limited to the daylight hours.

The approximate location of the PRB is indicated by the red line in the aerial view above. The PRB will be located on the other side of the landscaped berm behind the units at 50087 through 50167 Lexington West. All of this construction work will take place on the former Visteon plant property, not on the Manors' side of the fence.  Manors residents might be able to hear the equipment when work is underway but they will not be able to see any of this work unless they are standing on top of the berm.

Columbia Technologies appears to have finished their underground soil mapping project for the Ford Motor Company that took place on the vacant parcel to the north of the Manors and Kensington condos.

Demolition started on former Visteon Plant

Demolition of the former Ford/Visteon/ACH automotive trim plant located just to the west of the Manors began on Saturday, April 28, 2012.  Building #16 is the first structure on the property to fall to the demolition crew.  Their work hours are from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday.  Building demolition should be completed by around September 1st after which work will continue on the removal of underground utilities, concrete slabs and building foundations.  The last phase of the project will involve remediation of contaminated soil, final grading and grass seeding.

I have attended several meetings at the Shelby Twp. Municipal building that have been held about this project to make sure that potential issues with noise, air and water contamination have been adequately addressed. Everything I have learned has been documented on this web page which also includes some recent photographs.  Over the coming weeks, I will be adding weekly air quality testing results and photos to track the demolition progress, so you might want to bookmark that page for future reference.

You may have noticed recent contractor activity on the vacant parcel to the north of the Manors and Kensington.  That crew was drilling additional water monitoring test wells that will be used to check the underground water quality and verify that it has not been polluted by the contaminated soil on the Visteon parcel.

Demolition of the Visteon Plant

On May 25, 2011, the Shelby Twp. Planning Commission approved the demolition permit for Ford Motor Company's contractor to begin tearing down most of the manufacturing buildings on the Visteon property that is located along the east side of Mound Road, south of 23 Mile Rd.

I attended the public hearing and took notes and also received a copy of the conditions the Planning Commission placed on the demolition contractor.
