Even though it may not always have been apparent, the snow removal contractors operating here in the Manors and elsewhere in Central Park have been doing their best to keep the access drives, roads and entrances as clear as possible as we recover from this "snow emergency".
During the storm, the roadways were plowed multiple times and then salted. However, the extreme cold that followed rendered the salt applications ineffective and the salted snow formed an ice pack that was welded to the frozen pavement. The occasional sunshine during the daytime would warm the ice pack and turn the top layer into slush, which would then be plowed away, only to reveal another layer of ice pack that would need to be salted and plowed away once it turned into slush. After repeated cycles of salting and plowing, as of Friday afternoon January 10th the contractors were finally able to get down to bare pavement on most stretches of roadway.
As bad as the weather was, many residents living along the main Central Park ring roads were observed blowing and pushing the snow from their driveways out into the street, which is illegal in the State of Michigan. The additional snow is a safety hazard for motorists and an added burden to the contractors.
Also, the snow contractors had to contend with many cars that were parked in the streets in violation of Shelby Township's declared "snow emergency", including a half-dozen or so vehicles here in the Manors.
The Board of Directors reminds all Manors residents that in addition to the Township's prohibition of on-street parking during a "snow emergency" such as the one that was declared earlier this week (see below), overnight parking is prohibited on all streets and access drives in the Manors from November 1st through March 30th inclusive, unless a co-owner has received written approval from the Board of Directors. “Overnight” means the period from Midnight until 6:00 AM.
